It’s Oktoberfest season, and that means plenty of delicious German cuisine (and beer!) you can enjoy with friends and family.
Traditionally, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival and is held in Munich, Germany from mid-late September until the first week of October. Now, cities across the world have adopted the tradition for themselves. It’s a great excuse to enjoy some of Germany’s best foods, and we have all the classics!
You can't celebrate Oktoberfest without bratwurst. Ours is made with a savory blend of fresh-ground pork, white pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and ginger. Expand your menu with extraordinary sausage (and mustard!) from other parts of the world, like our Polish kielbasa (try it with KL Keller Black Truffle Dijon Mustard) and Irish banger sausages (perfect with Moutarde de Meaux Pommery Mustard). Pro Tip: Cook your brat the way the Germans do (in beer)!
Mustard is by far the best companion to brats and pretzels. Alstertor Dusseldorf Mustard is our favorite authentic German-style mustard. Made in Hamburg, it’s creamy and rich with a distinctively sharp flavor and aroma. This vibrant Dusseldorf mustard is also conveniently packaged in a festive beer stein that you can reuse once you’re out (it won’t take long).
Spaetzle, a traditional type of egg noodle popular in German cuisine, is one of our favorite sides to enjoy with brats. We recommend Bechtle Spaetzle—Bechtle has been making delicate and delicious noodles for more than 100 years. Each batch is made with durum semolina and cage-free eggs that are freshly cracked each day, and all the raw ingredients are GMO-free.
We particularly love the versatility of Spaetzle, since it can be enjoyed with a few simple ingredients or as a base for rich, savory and woodsy flavors, from sausage to mushrooms. Our favorite way to serve it up for Oktoberfest is to toss the spaetzle in browned butter, add a squeeze of lemon juice and finely chopped chives and serve. These authentic German noodles are also tasty topped with freshly grated Gruyere.
Your Bavarian feast wouldn’t be complete without some cabbage. Hengstenberg’s Sauerkraut is Germany’s favorite brand of sauerkraut and is locally farmed, preservative-free and made with a decades-old traditional family recipe. We also love their red cabbage, which is simply cooked and ready to heat.
Wash everything down with one of our two favorite Oktoberfest beers: Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest and Samuel Adams Octoberfest. The Sierra Nevada is crisp, clean, warm and rich, and the Samuel Adams is malty without being too sweet, with a sophisticated bitterness thanks to German Noble hops. Both pair nicely with all our Oktoberfest fare. Prost!
